Rob,
I had my instruments overhauled by Speedograph Richfield Ltd, a U.K.
specialist. They included a 'do/don't do' leaflet when they returned the
instruments and one of the items concerns lubrication of the cable. They
advise to pull the inner cable completely out, lubricate it sparingly
with GREASE, wipe the last 8 inches clean (the side close to the clock)
and push the inner cable back in its outer sleeve again. They advise NOT
to use oil, I presume to avoid the problem of drivers wetting/oiling
their pants!.
