Jim,
This happened to me a few years back. Normally, when OD is switched off,
the thrust ring is forced back by eight clutch release springs and via the
bearing forces the sliding member onto the cone part of the annulus for
direct drive. In my case these springs were weak (1/8" to 3/8" shorter than
the new ones) and had to be replaced. It fixed the problem. Prior to this
I had to whack the brake ring with a hammer to disengage.

Subject: stuck in overdrive
Occasionally my BN2 gets stuck in overdrive (physically stuck, not an
electrical problem), and won't come out untill everything cools down, or I
bang on the brake ring with the KO hammer. I believe its the cone clutch
sticking to the brake ring, but I'm not absolutely sure of this. When it
happens, I can't back up.
I use SAE30 non detergent oil in the gearbox. Do you suppose one of the
specialty transmission oils like Red Line MT-90 would cure this situation?
