Thanks to all who responded regarding the steering wheel 'catch' problem.
The 'catch' described earlier turned out to be caused by pitting in the rear
race of the steering worm gear.
Thanks also to those who responded
to my parts search for a serviceable steering shaft/worm gear assembly.
Steering is working good as new again.

Subject: Steering
Greetings:
Ref: Bj8 / adjustable steering wheel / original steering box
Problem:
During straight line driving there is a faint 'catch' in the middle of
steering wheel free play.
Attempts to diagnose so far:
Disconnect steering arm. Catch still there - and elsewhere during 3 1/2
revolutions of steering wheel.
Backed off and finally removed free play
adjustment screw. Catch still
there.
Removed three set screws and
backed signal light mechanism away from
steering wheel. Catch still there.
Where is that catch coming from ?
