There are a couple of potential causes to something with these symptoms:
1) As you guessed, your coil is probably going bad. They cost next to
nothing to replace, just get a new one.
2) The white wire that goes from the ignition switch, loops around the
back of your tach, and ends up at the coil can be a problem. This
wire carries more current than any other wire in the car, and as a
result can be prone to corrosion where the connectors come in contact
with the wire. As this gets more corrosion, the more resistance
builds up, the worse the corrosion gets... and as it heats up it can
cut the conductivity of the wire in its entirety. After driving the
car check the connector end of the wire on the back of the ignition
switch... if it is super hot... this could be your problem. To fix it
reattach all of the connections using a high quality soldered
connection... this can fix your problem as well.
