better off looking from across and using a mirror.

Absolutely.
Also PLEASE remember that inorder to remove said piston (and the others if it
comes to it) you HAVE to use a 'ridge reamer' (you can most likely borrow from
AutoZone, etc.) inorder to remove said "ridge" which you should be more than
able to feel with your fingernail.
