The float is supposed to go in facing forward, so that it will go down
into the reserve indentation in the bottom of the tank when you are
low on gas.
I actually prefer to have it installed facing towards the back of the
car. In this position it is closer to the center of the tank, and in
my opinion means it makes the needle fluctuate less when braking and
accellerating, but at the end of the day it doesn't make a huge
difference.
