David,
Your hard top could be painted in either red or black.
If a car enters Concours with a hard top fitted, the hard top is judged
instead of the soft top and it's related hardware. Point allotment for the
hardtop section is equal to and is used instead of the soft top section.
The hard top of course needs to be fitted to the car, because a portion of
the judging is evaluating the fit of the top, sidescreens, etc. to each
other and to the car.
If you want to set the car apart from others, simply do it all correctly.
That will be enough of a difference to set her apart, believe me!
A hardtop fitted to a judged car has only occured a couple of times, and
personally I thought it was lovely to see.
It would indeed be sacrilege to deface your car, and the Union Jack for that
matter, by painting the hardtop in that manner.
Many yeas ago I had a tricarb BT7 and used the hard top every early spring
and late fall, for the few weeks when nights could be frosty, but there was
no salt on the roads. The hard top transformed the car into a snug little
coupe. It also saved my soft top (which was still the original and 23 years
old at the time) and extended it's life during those cold nights going to
our club Pub Nights, some 30 miles each way of paved country roads. It was
truly delightful.
