I arrived in Naples a few years ago and was picked up at the airport by some
U.S. Navy guys for transport to the air station. When they ran through
several red lights in a row, I asked one why he was doing that. His
response was the same, "They're only suggestions, in case of cross traffic".

"Not a bad philosophy, he thought, as he sat immobile at the red light for
two minutes with nary another car in sight."

Mike, be careful out there with your BN2! I visited Milan a few years
ago and was driven around by one of the Italian guys of our Italian
sales office in his Alfa. He passed a traffic island on the wrong side,
and when I asked him why he didn't take the side indicated by a hefty
blue-and-white arrow he looked at me in astonishment and said: " But
Jack, that's only a suggestion!" .
