I've had a leather shift boot on my BJ8 so long that I don't remember where
I got it. Maybe from Sports and Classics, maybe at a local parts store.
Originally, I installed it because of the ragged rubber boot that was there
and the tremendous amount of hot air that was flowing out of the hole. I
didn't have any problem tying it off snugly at the top by taking a couple
laps around the shifter and the top of the boot with the integral
"shoestring" before tying it off in a bow. I have since replaced the rubber
boot, but continue to use the leather boot on top of it because to me the
shift lever looks a tad delicate and spindly without it.

Yes, I have an after market leather boot from J.C. Whitney. I attached it to
a worn out rubber boot with rivets. It still let in a lot of hot air because
I couldn't figure out how to tie the string at the top of the cone without a
half inch gap.
