Hi, Michael -
The nut turns CLOCKWISE to LOOSEN, as you view it sitting in the driver's
seat. I have successfully loosened the nut with a chain wrench after
padding the nut with an old cloth. Adjust the wrench by trial and error to
get it tight enough not to slip, and it should not damage the nut. I
believe the nut has a metal core, anyway.

The collar on my wife's 3000 is frozen--has been since I got the car. Since
the wheel is adjusted all the way in I have never attempted to loosen the
locknut with channel-locks or a pipe wrench as I was afraid to crack the
bakelight
but I am very interested to see what is recommended. BTW is this a
"righty-tighty" deal when facing the wheel or is it the other way around?
