John, when you screw the jet screw in the mixture becomes richer. Work it a
quarter of a turn at a time, after you've synchronized the carbs.
When you lift the pin about 1/32 of an inch (not including any slop) the
speed of the engine shoiuld pick up a bit, and then settle down to normal
idle speed.
If it speeds up and stays high, you can lean it out a bit more.
If the speed drops, it's too lean a mixture, and you'll also get backfiring
and popping in your exhaust note, too
A good way to lift the pin is to use one of those tubes that you can poke
into the carb piston. They come in a SU tuning kit. You remove the dashpot
pistons, insert the tubes, and then lift them 1/32 of an inch by pulling on
them.. It's much easier than using the built-in lifting pin, and more
accurate. It's really a help, too, if you have fat fingers!
Hope that helps.

Subject: HD8 Mixture
Hello listers - Would someone please refresh my memory on:
1. The direction in which to turn the jet adjusting screw to make the
mixture richer
2. How to to interpret what the engine does when that little pin on the
carburetor is pushed up?
Thanks So Much - John
