To add some substance to the negative comments about Fram, I can attest
to the following:
1) I've cut a few brands of filters open (car and light aircraft). The Fram
PH3600
used thinner sheetmetal and the backend of the element (opposite the
openings)
was made of cardboard. the Wix "equivalent" uses thicker sheetmetal, and the
backend is a steel disk. I don't recall a big difference between the bypass
mechanisms of either.
2) I have removed Fram filters after they've sat for a half-hour or so after
warming
the engine for an oil change. The filters were essentially empty. Wix
filters
will still contain about 3/4 of capacity (indirect evidence of the efficacy
of the
respective anti-drainback valves). When I start the car, I get oil pressure
within
3 seconds of engine start whether the car has sat for 10 minutes or 10 weeks.
I cannot attest to the filtering ability of either ... I suspect they are
roughly the same.
I'd just prefer to spend an extra buck or two for an apparently superior
product. The
Wix is constructed similarly to the Champion aircraft oil filters I've examined.
My observations only.
