Bill,
It sounds like the screen attached to the end of the pickup pipe within
the tank itself may be plugging up. While the car is at rest the
sediment settles to the bottom of the tank. So the car runs good until
enough sediment collects on the screen to block fuel flow and the
missing begins.
You could drain the fuel and drop the tank. You can empty what remains
into a coffee can and see the amount of sediment. If there is a lot, it
means the tank is rusting out. The choice is then use one of the kits
offered by various suppliers to clean and seal the tank (not the best
solution) or purchase a new steel or aluminum tank depending on how much
green stuff you want to spend..
