Bruce.
My steering box started leaking badly about five years ago and I have been
using regular grease in it ever since. Seems to work fine. I pumped as
much of the gear oil out as I could using a little hand squeeze pump and
then filled it with grease. To fill it I removed the end fitting from my
grease gun's pipe and fitted a 12" length of 1/4" OD clear plastic hose
(purchased at a hardware store) inside the grease fun pipe. With this I
pump it into the box through the regular top filler hole.
I'm not sure if grease lubricates the steering gear as well as gear oil, but
I can't tell the difference in any aspect of the steering after five years.
Vrooom vrooom,
John
