This is a common problem with the BJ8's HD8 carburettors. If you twist
the choke knob it'll sort of lock the choke cable, make sure the knob moves
(relatively) freely.
The return springs on the carb--one under the diaphragm, one on the top of the
cam "foot" shaft--are too weak to do the job. All you can do is make sure
the choke mechanism works as smoothly and freely as possible (a little
silicone oil might help). I've put beefier springs on the cam foot shaft (near
the
throttle stops), which helped some. I also modified a binder clip to fit over
the
firewall cable mechanism, to keep the cables from backing out of the little
metal
block that attaches the two cables from the carbs to the cable to the knob.
That
helps some too, but mine still sticks occassionally.
Otherwise, about all you can do is put some return springs under the choke
levers, as you have done.
