I'm not from England, but our trip to the Revival was arranged by an English
auto travel specialist, though that's not really necessary. Congratulations on
going, and on planning ahead -- it is the BEST auto event in the world, bar
none.
l. Book a nice bed and breakfast anywhere within 30 miles -- there are
several English websites for B&Bs. There isn't much close in that is readily
available unless you're a regular. Lots of nice small towns in the area; just
check a
good map.
2. Get a ticket that includes access to one of the pavilions for at least one
of the days you'll be there -- preferred parking, inside the circuit marquee,
morning coffee, proper sit-down luncheon, afternoon tea, place to relax,
closed-circuit tv and your own private viewing stand inside the circuit -- and
not
for all that much money (unlike the U.S. where this kind of thing is only
available to the big sponsors' guests). On the other days (and go all three
days
if at all possible -- and you still won't see all there is to see) just get
a ticket for one of the grandstands, but plan to walk the whole circuit at
least once.
3. Dress up -- start looking in the thrift shops and online for proper 1950s
garden party dress -- nice dress or suit, with hat, gloves, and purse for your
wife -- a medium-weight summer suit or sport coat, plus 50s tie and homburg,
or fedora to top it off -- soft caps are all right, but they're so common!.
Nearly two-thirds of the spectators dress for the period, and ALL the
participants dress for the period -- it's "the fastest costume party on four
wheels."
And in any case, admission to the paddock where the race cars are on display
is only possible with appropriate dress (no trousers or shorts for women,
except if part of a period military uniform) and coat and tie for men (coat
may be
removed if temp goes over 85).
4. Spend absolutely as much time there as you can -- in addition to the
races, there is a vendors area of period vendors, a live, active WWII war
planes
display with scrambles and sorties in between every race, lots of period
displays to see, plus all the cars, and lots of live actors playing 40s and
50s parts
throughout the area.
