Hi, Sid -
I tried a couple of times to use silicone to seal the spokes, but the grease
turned the silicone to a very sticky jelly so that when I next pulled the
wheel for cleaning and regreasing the splines, the silicone was very difficult
to remove. I was, and am, using high-temp wheel bearing grease for the
splines. Another grease or different brand of silicone might have yielded
better results.
I have found that 3M body seam sealant available at body shop supply stores
and applied with a finger does a good job of sealing the spoke heads and is
not affected by the grease. Whatever you use, be sure to clean the grease
cavity and spoke heads thoroughly before sealing. I would recommend scrubbing
the area with a toothbrush and 3M adhesive remover before sealing.

Subject: Sealing wheels
I am anticipating receiving my new Dayton chrome wheels. A local club
member
suggested coating the front inner spoke nubs with RTV or other silicone
sealant to prevent grease from wicking out onto the spokes. Makes for
easier
cleaning. Any pros or cons?
