Simon. I have been thinking along the same lines but as you, I did not want to do anything permanent. Did your new pipes come bolt on or did you have to have them made? Are they stainless? One of the advantages I see in this set up is not dragging the old pipes on the pavement every time I go over driveway entrance. Lots of hills in Maine.
