The easy way to tell what the problem is...is to check the generator out
put.
1 Remove the two wires from the generator back plate.
2. Put a jumper wire between the two posts.
3. With a voltmeter connect one lead to the jumpered posts and the other to
ground.
4. Start car--a good generator will produce 50 or more volts at about
1800/2500 RPM.
5. If generator is making something close to that range and you battery is
going flat, then suspect the regulator, the battery, or the connections
between (especially grounds)

PS Norman is quite right in suggesting that one not bend anything in the
regulator, at the risk of melting your wiring harness... (there are screw
adjustments provided, but know what you are adjusting !)
