Hi Ben,
No expert - But I have done it.
It isn't really so hard to get out. You can't do any work on it without
removing it. Two defroster tubes, two nuts under the dash & one nut
hidden under a rubber plug on the engine side of the firewall, 7/16
socket on a short extension, don't drop the nut. Two hoses on the engine
side, & a couple of wires under the dash.
Heater cores are available from Moss, but, pretty expensive. There is a
good chance that a radiator shop can clean & repair your core.
Remove the three spring clips to get the whole assembly apart. Perhaps
the worst part will be remembering how & where the switch wiring is
routed. Check the fan motor while it is out & have any noisy bearings
replaced, or at least re-lube them.
