Sounds like the starter pinion is stuck in mesh with the flywheel ring gear.
I once bought an MGB that the owner thought had a siezed engine. We bought
the car under that understanding, got it home and my son unbolted the
starter motor and it pooped loose. Then the engine turned easily.
