I'll take a WAG:
Presumably, the people that buy big-ticket autos are wealthy (at least
BEFORE they buy the cars ;). Someone with access to DMV records
could use the plate numbers to find the address and other personal info
about the high-rolling buyers.
Watch Barrett-Jackson on TV for an hour and you could get info on a lot
of well-off people if you could track the plates.
