I was suspicious about the arm on the steering box. The box was sent out to be
re bushed. When I checked it prior to installation, the arm had been removed.
It seemed as though the arm could only fit over the splined shaft at 45 degree
intervels becase of the pattern of the splines. I centered the steering as
closely as possible prior to installing the arm. It seemed that if the arm had
been installed at the next
position either way that it would be grossly out of alignment. I couldn't find
any marks to confim the correct position and didn't see anything in the
worksop manual that helped.
I guess I don't have any evidence on whether it is installed correctly or not
but there deffinitely seems to be something wrong. How did you resolve your
problem ?

Hello, Sam,
Be sure to check that the pitman arms on the steering box and steering idler
are properly installed. Despite what some have stated they can be installed
backwards (you don't need to ask me how I know this....). If one or both of
the arms are on improperly the condition you have would result. Also, make
sure the steering arm is installed with the steering wheel positioned properly
(another one you don't need to ask about....).

I've been helping a fellow clubmember with the restoration of his MK1
BN7 and have come accross a problem in trying to adjust for the proper
toe in for the front end. We've run out of adjustment and the wheels
are still significantly toed out. I've been following earlier posts on
similar problems but after close checking, the assembly on this car
looks exactly the same as my BN4.
We did notice one difference yesterday when we decided to measure the
lenghth of the crossrods on the two cars. The crossrod on the BN7 is
almost an inch greater in length than the BN4.
I noticed that there is a changover point in the BN7/BT7 production to
a different style crossrod.
We have no information on the history of this car and it is being
assembled from more than one car.
Does anyone have information on the comparable lengths of the two
styles and how this could effect the allignment ?
