David, I am not a paint expert, but you I think pretty much know the answer
to your question from some of your comments, modern base/coat clear coat
does not look like the paint applied to our cars when new, regardless of
color.

A lot of people do them, so much so that if you don't and you park at the
show next to those who do, some may say "whats wrong with your paint".

When I repainted my TR4 BRG a few years ago I used a modern Urethane Enamel
WITHOUT clearcoat, which I thought was a nice compromise between modern and
tradition.

I also painted an MGB BRG with old fashioned lacquer (can oyu still get it)
a few years before that, and was not happy with looks (probably my
inexperience) or durability (very easy to scratch and chip, maybe inherent
in the product maybe once again a poor painter)
