I just went thru the 100-4 grille thing. I got a new one from British
Car Specialists ( David Knock on our list). I think they get them from
Moss. Not good! Two problems, first the shape is not right. There is a
flat at the top with a facet ( miter joint )similar to the one at the bottom
of the surround. Second the tabs are hard and impossible to bend into place
without distorting the outside shape. The restorer I'm working with saw it
coming and we gave it a try lightly but gave up before we ruined anything so
I can send it back. I wound up using my old damaged one which we stripped
(at chrome platter) and then straightened out to fit the shroud. The
surround is brass under the chrome and is pretty easy to work. Fit it to
both grille and shroud before having it re-plated. My guy is a pretty good
panel beater type, not a trim restoration specialist, and it went so well
that I would say your surround would have to be really messed up to be
un-restorable.
I think the Knocks and Moss are great resources. This is not a
complaint about them just a heads up on grille surrounds.
