Hand Brake handle finish

Was the original finish on the hand brake handle (BN7) shiny chrome? Or was it
plated with some type of flat chrome finish?  Mine is really worn smooth and
dull and I can see some rust showing through what appears to be a thin layer
of chrome plating.  Was the shaft treated differently than the handle or is it
just a dull finish because it has a sand casting surface texture??  Thanks.
