Ron,
The general impression I get from stories about problems with the original
ignition system is that problems arise from worn out components being
"stretched", re-using old insulators and distributor wires, missing tiny lock
washers, points not properly tightened etc. Also, then there is the issue of
getting the PROPER rotor, and sourcing distributor caps. It is my own
experience that when all of the parts are there, in good condition, properly
set, and tight, the ignition is reliable.
Mallory distributors replace the whole works and should be even more reliable,
but are clearly not original. Pertronix units work, but recent list responses
have stated that they seem to have a limited lifespan..
My own personal opinion has been that it is best to keep the original setup,
but take the care to see that any old worn or questionable components are
replaced with care and with no cut-corners. It is cheaper to do, and done
properly is reliable. -Also, on long road trips, it is easier and cheaper to
carry a spare distributor rebuild kit than to carry a spare Pertronix.
-This all with the disclaimer that I particularly enjoy the original
engineering aspects of old cars, and that unless it detracts from the safety
or severely limits the ability to enjoy the car, I like to keep things
original and make them work.

  Ron--

Many of the problems reported as of late involve rotors and their
interference with distributor caps, etc. Be aware that using a Pertronix
conversion will
not eliminate this problem. I use a Mallory Unilite and have had no
problems
save once when a ground wire went open.
