The difference is in water pressure and duration, as well as whether
the car is running or not. Floods have ruined many cars. An hour's
standing in water can leak water into wheel bearings etc., also if
things are bad enough, water can leak from the bell housing back past
the spiral oil throwers and into both tranny and engine. Even cars
with oil seals have these problems.
The car may seem fine for a few days or weeks but if it isn't torn
down or at least if the sumps aren't checked for water immediately I
think that the owner is running a serious risk.
