Thanks for those who responded.
It turned out not to be the bleeding.
I had installed the springs on the front brakes incorrectly. The springs
should pull against the stationary end of the shoe. I had them pulling against
the moving end. This was causing the whole brakes shoe to slide in its cradle
instead of pivot. I should have known something was wrong when I put it
together it was a bear to get it in the wrong way. Much easier when you have
it correct.
