Neglected to post the list on this - I think I should - someone else may
have a better idea - Earl

Jim:
Your original post came through - I guess people didn't know what to say - I
had to think about it for a bit.
There is what I call a 'reverse pop-out' mechanism which is integral with
the reverse gear selector fork assembly. The spring loaded plunger (or
ball - I can't remember) is sticking sometimes when you come out of reverse.
This thing actually aligns the gate for the 1 - 2 selector mechanism.
Could be the spring is broken, or maybe even tired, or some crud has gotten
in there to mess things up. I have overcome this occasionally by gently
'slapping' the shift lever quickly to the left from the neutral position in
order to hopefully free up the 'pop-out'. It's a pain to have to do this
frequently, but if it's only occasionally, it's not all that bad - easier to
do than describe - a little experimentation will tell you if it's going to
work.
I would think that the only reliable permanent fix would be to pull the
gearbox and get the reverse fork out and on the bench to diagnose and
replace parts as necessary - I know, just what you wanted to hear!
Maybe this little trick will work well enough to keep you going until
something else in the gearbox or overdrive breaks - ugh!
Let us know.

apparently the letter i posted never made it to the list. i need help trying
to find out why and fix a transmission problem on my bj8. the detent that
keeps the tranny from going into reverse when downshifting to second seems
to
stick and lets the shifter go clear over to the reverse position, which
causes
much clashing of gears when it happens. this happened a few years ago and i
removed the top but could not see how to remove the detent so i just tapped
it
a few times and it has worked pretty good up to now. any ideas?
appreciation
in advance. healeymanjim
