trans-bell house bolts

Dear List,
What a bummer of a day. Trying to put my bellhousing on today, I found 6 of
the threaded holes on the transmittion had widened so the bolts wiggled
after being threaded in. One was completely stripped. Question is, will
heli-coils work or should I just move up to the next size bolt which would
be 3/8". I REALLY didn't want to tear down the tranny.
