If the OD & tranny are already back in the car, and you don't want to remove
it again, testing is somewhat limited. -Ensure it engages while rear wheels
are off the ground
-Ensure the lockout switch is working (i.e. won't engage while in R,1,2)
-If you have a multi-meter, you can set it to amps and put the leads in line
between the solonoid & switch. It should draw ~15 amps very briefly after
the switch is flipped, then when the plunger is in place (OD engaged) it
should drop to ~1 amp. A higher reading could mean solonoid failure is
near.
-An easy and important maintenance step is to remove the operating valve
(carefully), and ensure the pin hole in the shaft is not plugged.
-If you're ambitious, you could get a pressure guage rigged up to screw into
the operating valve, and measure the accumulator pressure. It should read
about 460-480 psi with drivetrain moving, and when the car is shut off, it
should be slow (several hours) to bleed off this pressure.

Subject: BJ8 overdrive testing in car?
List,
Any diagnostic/preventitive tests that could be/should
be done on the overdrive unit before closing the
