One thing I've encountered in sealing the rear hub assembly effectively is
that when the new seal is installed, bearing replaced, and locknut and tab
washer all tight and in place the last thing to button up is the axle shaft
onto the hub bearing carrier. The new O ring is installed and the paper
gasket is positioned. The axle shaft flange is seated onto the carrier and a
little 1/4" fine thread countersunk setscrew is supposed to tighten the
flange to the carrier. It's been my experience that you can't apply enough
force to the screw alone to tighten, compress the new o ring and seal this
joint effectively.
Get 5 flat washers to use as spacers and run these and the 5 spline hub
locknuts onto the studs, and tighten all evenly. Then run the countersunk
screw in tight into a securely seated axle flange. Now remove the 5 locknuts
and washers, install the brake drum, etc. and proceed buttoning up the rest
of the job.
