After several listers pointed out that I should reexamined whether the
starter pinion is interfering with the ring gear and causing the noise I went
to the
auto store and bought some starter shims. I have put in about 1/8" worth top
and bottom and it seems like the noise is slightly less intense, though it is
hard to tell. It looks like it is time to remove the starter and take some
measurements, as was suggested early on. I should point out, BTW, that this is
a pre-engaged starter which pushes the pinion back as opposed to the stock
one which pulls forward. I put it on when the original began to get lazy, but
it
is still on hand.
In any case, I owe many of you a debt of thanks for your great suggestions
and an apology for having walked right by the obvious and asked a needless
question. This list is a good place to get help and information and also a
great
site for showing my ignorance.
