Hi Ken,
This one is a little hard to diagnose. The symptoms are nearly the same
for a slipping clutch & a slipping unidirectional clutch in the
overdrive. The unidirectional clutch is involved in all non OD drive
functions but not for over run torque. It is not involved when the car
is in overdrive, but if the main clutch is slipping there may not be
enough torque in 3rd over to make it slip anyway.
I know it is little comfort, but if it is the unidirectional clutch it
will get worse & completely fail before the main clutch gets worse. Not
sure how heat fits into the problem. One solution is to replace the
clutch & if that doesn't cure the problem, check the OD.
I hope someone has a more accurate assessment of the problem.
