I inadvertently created this problem for myself when I reset the jet needles
in the carb pistons (one of the needles had come loose and I was re-securing
both of them).
Anyway, in moving the needles maybe 0.25mm up into the pistons I had made
the carbs run rich (I wondered why it fired so quickly with little choke).
After
the engine was hot and I sat at a red light the idle gradually dropped off ...
I didn't
let it die, but when I got home I let the idle fall until the car died.
Maybe something is causing an excessively rich mixture--like fuel boiling
in the carbs (suggested by Mike Salter)--or some sort of flooding or fuel
leak.
When the HD diaphragms break they can flood the carb.
