If your carbs are setup correctly, so that it won't start without a 
choke, you can use the timing light at cranking speed which is low 
enough to set static advance. The other way is to set maximum advance 
to 
38 degrees at 5000 rpm & let the rest of the numbers fall where they 
will. The max advance is the really important number anyway.

Dave, my recently acquired BN2 starts without choke [albeit that the ambient 
here in Houston is in the nineties]. Does this mean the PO has set the mixture 
too rich? The car runs very well and seems to be returning good mileage. Carb 
installation appears entirely stock. The car has the correct original 
distributor, but with a Lucas Sports coil.
