Wednesday--
We started the day out with a side-trip from Paradise up to Whitefish Point,
which marks the entrance from Lake Superior into Whitefish Bay. It was near
here where the Edmund Fitzgerald sank with all hands in a 1975 gale (you'll
remember Gordon Lightfoot's song). The outstanding Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum
sits adjacent to the Lighthouse and the Fitz's ship's bell was recovered in
1994 and placed with great honor and ceremony in the museum's main building.
Doubling back to Paradise we fueled up and set out west across the UP into
deteriorating weather and darkening sky--very soon temperatures had dropped to
mid 50's and rain was pretty much a constant. After dropping down to Newberry
and joing into Highway 28 the route was relatively flat and uninteresting as
far as Munising, where we again joined the Superior shoreline and at the same
time the skies cleared. We had great views of the distant Marquette Range, and
we ran along the sandy shore through small resort towns and clusters of
lakefront cottages and so into Marquette for the night.
After a pleasant drive along the bayfront up to Presque Isle we doubled back
into town and met fellow lister John Stevens for dinner at the Vierling
Saloon, an outstanding restaurant owned by Terry Doyle who also happens to own
a
Healey. Terry and John played hosts to Peter and Ann Hunt when they passed
through Marquette during their "Around the World Tour" in 2001. BTW, John and
his
wife Cerona will be in San Antonio for Conclave.
Tomorrow's forecast is for clearing weather and we have a relatively easy day
into Duluth, where we are staying the night with Bob and Margie Bell of the
Minnesota AHC.
A few things I was told today: People from the Lower Michigan peninsula call
those from the Upper Peninsula "Yoopers" and they in turn are called
"Trolls" by folks from up here, all people from Michigan are called
"Michiganders"
and "Pasties" (the baked pies eaten by Yoopers) is pronounced with a short "A".
Best--Michael
