Thanks to all who responded. I checked the floats again and found them intact.
Reset the float level. Found no dirt blocking the needle/seat9 new fuel
filter). Checked the fuel pump and found, to my surprise, an ECCO pump which
sounds exactly like an SU pump and even looks similar on quick inspection.
Replaced that with an appropriate SU pump, hooked up all the tubes and the car
ran--very well as it turns out. No more fuel spillage! So--what was the
problem--not sure but it is now fixed.
