Scott:

Sorry, one of us should have mentioned - the 'rear main seal kit' that we
all talk about is not in the original workshop or parts books - it's an
aftermarket kit that most of us seem to be using to minimize oil leaks in
the crankshaft area at the rear of the block - it enhances the original
scroll seal that gets worn with time. The instructions that come with the
kits are pretty straightforward. Any of the specialist Healey suppliers
should have them. Check with Bill when you order the flywheel - he may stock
them, or be able to get one for you.

The cork seal that you refer to has to be the bearing cap seal - you won't
have to worry about that unless you plan on completely dismantling the
engine!

There should be no problem using your air impact wrench to remove the
flywheel bolts - I always do. Be aware of the safety issues - you'll have
your face pretty close to where the wrench is - close quarters in there.
Proper impact socket, eye protection just in case, etc. Suggestion: leave
one of the bolts loosely threaded until you nudge the flywheel backwards off
of its locating studs on the crankshaft - it can pop off very suddenly and
drop and hurt! As soon as you've done it the first time, you'll understand.

There is no trick to installing the flywheel - you'll see that as soon as
you've got it off. The TDC timing mark procedure applys to the front
crankshaft pulley/damper assembly, and the engines valve timing.

Fun, aint it!

Thanks for advice. One day I hope to be able to tell someone something of
value.

Is there anywhere on net or in books that has the steps to replace the rear
main seal? I can't even find the seal in Moss or my books. Too stupid I
suppose to know what it is supposed to look like. It's not listed or
described anywhere I can find as 'rear main seal'.

Also I can't get the bolts for the flywheel loose. Can I use my air impact
wrench or do I risk damaging something? Ed told me about a great hand held
impact wrench for rusty screws. It worked great for screws and other nuts
but it's not working on these bolts. Can't get an angle to whack with
hammer. Want to use air power but I worry about stupid impatience..

I read about a seal behind the flywheel made of cork. Said : "Note cork
seal". Is that main seal?

Is it difficult to replace the flywheel? I was reading about the '1' in TDC.
Is that just an eyeball thing or is it a precise deal?

Ordering lightened flywheel from Bill.

Wheeee... bad to the garage.

Cheers,
Scott
