I started out making a crate with 2x4s.=C2=A0 Made the frame and then was =
going to cover it with plywood.=C2=A0 Before I even got to the plywood, the=
crate weighed over 50#.=C2=A0 I took it apart and bought the plastic trans=
mission shipping box.
When I shipped a TR3 rear axle for the Southwick conversion I made a plywoo=
d crate.=C2=A0 I made steel corner brackets that were on the inside (since =
UPS does not like a lot of exposed metal) and used cap screws.=C2=A0 I secu=
red the axle housing inside the crate.=C2=A0 I could have done the same for=
a transmission crate, but was too lazy to make the metal brackets.=C2=A0=
=C2=A0
There is a UPS upcharge of about $5 for shipping a parcel that is not in ca=
rdboard.=C2=A0 JoeB

Many years ago I had a rebuilt overdrive shipped to me in a cardboard box =
weight minimal packing material to protect it. =C2=A0It arrived with the pa=

=A0 =C2=A0It had to have fallen hard. =C2=A0That cardboard box offered litt=

Do take the time to crate it up. =C2=A0If you=E2=80=99re handy, think about=
minimizing weight. =C2=A0I went overboard during that incident and built a=
heavy, heavy duty crate to ship the broken trans back in so that it=E2=80=
=99s replacement would be shipped back in that crate! =C2=A0No doubt, that =
extra weight cost money! =C2=A0 (I don=E2=80=99t recall the shipper and cos=
ts.)
Add handles or whatever helps to make it easier for shippers to move it saf=
ely.
