Most EZups are a disaster waiting to happen in a wind of more than 8-10
mph. A 15-20 mph gust will have you chasing it down the paddock unless well
secured. A 12 mile per hour wind will generate 86lbs of force/sq.Ft. x the
area of the covering. So a 12x12 EZup. could generate up to 1032 lbs of
force.
Just securing it with 25 lb weights is unworthy of the pressure created by
the wind.( If you are a sailor, you know what a little gust can do.) As
mentioned in previous posts, start with 5 gallon water buckets (8.3
lbs/gallon) at each corner, and tie it taunt to the upper frame of the
EZup. Helps if you know your proper knots. This helps transfer the wind
force to the ground. Just weighting the foot is inefficient because much of
the force is wasted just holding down the ground. Gravity has that covered.
The next step is to secure topside belly lines over the EZup. Use separate
buckets, (or alternative tie off ) and place them at the corners. Toss
lines diagonally over the top and secure them tight. This will reduce the
billowing effect of the wind and the pressure. You can also tie to a car
or?? but it really gets displeasing and embarrassingly hilarious when
someone makes the beer run with the EZup in tow.
