This topic sure has many solutions and suggestions. Here's my approach.
Knowing that sometimes a number change is needed for an event, when I had my
numbers printed I had extra 1s and 8s printed at a minimal extra cost, in the
same size and font.

The 1 could be placed in front or back of the my usual 63, or the 8 can be
trimmed to make a 3 into an 8. Of course there are other options with the extra
numbers.

When applying the numbers always use a spray bottle of water with a drop or two
of dish soap. Spray the panel and the back side of the number. This allows
plenty of time for placement and adjustment, then squeegee the number in place.
A ruler and a level can be helpful too. The panel should be clean and waxed.
Wax will help with removal.

For a quickie solution, I'd choose electrical tape over duct tape, but I
appreciate the denim adhesive reduction trick. Contact paper is a good idea
too.
