Hi Neil,
By testing without the ball and spring you would get a totally invalid
result because oil would leak down the center of the operating valve push
rod and out through the small pressure relief hole to the sump.
When the overdrive is engaged and the operating valve ball is lifted off
its seat by the push rod the hole in the top of the push rod is blocked by
the ball being held against it by the spring.
