Sonoma, CA -- Two-time national championship winner Jerry Barker is now
a two-time Kastner Cup winner after racing his=C2=A0"Herald from Hell" to
the podium. With only a few hours to spare before Sunday's flag race,
Jerry completely replaced a broken engine in a competitor's car --
coincidentally, it was Jerry's own backup=C2=A0race car, piloted by his
son, Jerry Barker Jr.

Triumph racers traveled far and wide to fill out the largest run-group
in CSRG's David Love Memorial Races. One racer began his journey by
nearly getting stuck in a Canadian snowdrift before finally arriving in
California's wine country. Others came from as far as Iowa, Colorado
and New Mexico. SoCal's own=C2=A0"E-Ticket Triumphs" showed up in force
with their TR4s, 3s, and Spitfires.

People who race Triumphs are a special breed who will not think twice
about shaking your hand if it's dirty with oil and grease, or give you
their crank-pulley, even if it means removing the front part of your
busted TR3 for an hour just to get to it. The Triumph marque=C2=A0attracts
a brotherhood of friendly, helpful enthusiasts who are kind-hearted in
the paddock and fiercely quick on the track. One such racer, former
Kastner Cup winner Ken Knight, allowed Steve Belfer to race his

Authenticity Rules at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion
Monterey, CA -- To uphold this event's prominence as the world's only
historic racing event that still requires cars be authentically
prepared, organizers have issued a set of guidelines for this year's
race.
=09The RMMR organizers have issued a set of guidelines to ensure the
spirit of Historic Period Specification at this year's Monterey
Reunion. =C2=A0
=C2=A0First, any historic race car that is accepted to participate must be
restored in the spirit of Historic Period Specification and as exact as
possible to its original components. When components such as engine
management control units, original wheels, etc., are not available,
HMSA technical staff will determine the acceptability of alternative
components that represent close correlation to what was originally
used. Examples of unacceptable changes include: increased displacement,
contemporary valve train components, contemporary drive train
components, traction control, non-period brake system components and
other modern technology driver aids.
=C2=A0
Second, historic race cars also must be presented in their correct
period body configuration, including spoilers, wings (i.e., splitters),
aerodynamic devices, wheels and tires. Paint, livery and graphics must
be "as raced" in the period represented, so no modern paint schemes,
graphics or signage will be accepted (Thank you -- Ed.)

Any vehicle that is determined to not be in an acceptable period
configuration/specification will not be allowed to participate in the
event until it is determined that all corrections to period
specifications are completed.

How Racing Made The Jaguar Marque
Scottsdale, AZ -- Racing success put Jaguar cars on the map of
motorists worldwide; Le Mans 24 Hour wins in 1951 and 1953 (C-Type) and
1955-57 (D-Type) placed the British manufacturer among the leaders in
sports-car development. There was a long gap until the XJR prototypes
won again at Le Sarthe in 1988 and 1990.
The importance of motorsport to Jaguar's place in the automotive
hierarchy was the subject last Tuesday on the final day of the
inaugural International Jaguar Festival, a three-day circus of
concours, rally, slalom and other activities held at the Scottsdale
Plaza Resort here.

A discussion led by Indy 500 veteran and Hagerty Education Program

Lyn St. James highlighted the "Preserving the Jaguar Motorsport
Heritage" panel. Group 44 founder/owner and racer Bob Tullius and
former Jaguar North America president Mike Dale recounted their
exploits and friendship that spanned the Jaguar/Group 44 E-Type
successes through GTP dominance in IMSA and Group C competition. Dale,
also the keynote speaker at the awards banquet finale, noted that in
the 1980s Jaguar's U.S. sales had dropped from 70,000 units to just
3,000 annually. Asked how to fix it, his answer was "let's go auto
racing."
Anecdotes about the internal strife at Jaguar were interspersed with
fascinating glimpses of their shared love of flying and vintage
aircraft; Tullius owned and flew a WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter, and
Dale is currently building a World War I-era French Nieuport biplane.
Tullius talked of his win in the first-ever Trans-Am race in a Dodge
Dart as well as the challenges of delivering consistent performance in
the face of rapidly changing technology.
Next up were Le Mans winner Davy Jones and Jaguar restorer and vintage
racer Brian Donovan. Ever the versatile driver, Jones shared his experience
as a 14-year-old completing the Bertil Roos Drivng School and later his
2nd-place
finish at Indianapolis in 1996 and outright win at the 24 Hours of Le
Mans just two weeks later, in a Tom Walkinshaw Racing Jaguar prototype.
Donovan, a former mechanical engineer, told of the passion for Jaguar
cars that fueled his desire to compete in vintage racing. That love of
the marque led to his formation of Donovan Motor Services in 1984.
Both discussed the dichotomy of skills of vintage "weekend warriors" versus
moonlighting professionals. Donovan explained that once he put
professional drivers=C2=A0
in his well-prepared E-Types, that he realized he was an amateur
driver. After 19 years of driving his No. 62 E-Type racer, he hung up
his helmet to focus on the innovative manufacturer-sponsored Jaguar
Select Edition vintage racing team in the mid-2000s.
In answer to an audience question about risking such valuable equipment
on the=C2=A0
track, Donovan echoed many of the vintage racing community's concerns
regarding=C2=A0
period authenticity and increasing the efforts of sanctioning bodies
toward that end.

Donington Historic Festival Will Honor Iconic Racers =C2=A0
Derby, England -- Two fascinating characters from the early days of
motor racing will be honored at this year's Donington Historic Festival
(April 30-May 2).
=09They put on a proper historic race at Donington.
=C2=A0Tazio Nuvolari will be celebrated in the Historic Grand Prix Car
Association's Nuvolari Trophy for pre-1950 Grand Prix cars, while
tribute will be paid to Richard "Mad Jack" Shuttleworth in Motor Racing
Legends' "Mad Jack" race for prewar sports cars.

Drivers and cars are coming from Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany,
Italy and the USA to honor Nuvolari. The race also celebrates the 80th
anniversary of the 1936 Grand Prix at Donington Park, at which Richard
Seaman and Hans Ruesch took the checkered flag in an ex-Nuvolari
Scuderia Ferrari Alfa Romeo Tipo 8C-35.

Marques represented in the HGPCA Nuvolari Trophy include Alfa Romeo,
Bugatti, ERA, Maserati, MG and Talbot Lago. Two unique entries that
competed at Donington Park in the late 1930s, the Alta Norris Special
and the Parnell MG, are expected.

In 1935, daredevil aviator and racing driver Richard "Mad Jack"
Shuttleworth won the first Donington Grand Prix in his Alfa Romeo Tipo
B (P3). His exploits in cars and aircraft are legendary; he once

purchased recently was being used for towing a muck spreader.

This truck model's name was derived from its 95-inch wheelbase (as
compared to the 108-inch on the passenger cars) and hinging part of the
passenger side so it could be lowered to form a ramp into the cargo
bay. They also featured rear-mounted, air-cooled, 80hp flat-six engines
driving the rear wheels through a three-speed synchromesh transaxle
that gives more power than Volkswagen pickups.

This model year featured a new grille and rear taillight design with

SCCA Solo Legend John Kelly Passes Away=C2=A0=C2=A0
Topeka, KS -- John Kelly, of Pleasanton, California, a member of the
SCCA since 1969, passed away April 2 at the age of 80.

=C2=A0Kelly, along with his wife Pat, was instrumental in the formation and=
guidance of the San Francisco Region Solo program in the 1970s that
spawned many national champions.

A three-time national champion in D Prepared (1980, '81, and '82),
Kelly also served on the Solo Events Board. He also published an
autocross publication, North American Pylon, and a wider ranging racing
paper, MotoRacing. Prior to that, Kelly published the San Francisco
Region's newsletter, The Wheel.

Plans had already been underway to recognize the Kelly's contributions
during the Tire Rack Match Tour event on April 23 in Crow's Landing
near their hometown, and those plans will continue.
