Don't forget to lift the lever up, before shifting into reverse. Many folks=
tend to force the gear lever over to the right (hitting it hard with the b=
ack of your hand), then down, without lifting.=C2=A0 This causes undue wear=
on the shift fork shaft.=C2=A0 There is an intentional 'lock out' in the d=
esign of the shaft, which is designed to prevent shifting into reverse when=
you really wanted a forward gear. Constant shifting into reverse without l=
ifting the lever will gradually wear down the shift fork shaft so that this=
'lock out' feature will no longer be functional.=C2=A0 This will then caus=
e more unintentional shifting into reverse when the car is moving forward, =
and resultant damage to the reverse gear.
A case in point.=C2=A0 Years ago, I went to look at a TR-4 that was for sal=
e, and was going to take it for a test drive. I had to back out of the spac=
e where it was parked.=C2=A0 We got in the car (me in the driver's seat, se=
ller in the passenger seat), and he instructed me to hit the left side of t=
he shift lever with the right side of my hand, as hard as I could.=C2=A0 He=
explained that this would move the lever over far enough that I could then=
pull it down into reverse.=C2=A0 He told me this was the way it was suppos=
ed to work.=C2=A0 Obviously, no one had instructed him on the correct proce=
dure.=C2=A0 Over the years, I've taken apart a number of gear boxes, and al=
most all of them have excessive wear on the reverse gear shift fork shaft, =
most to the point where there is virtually no 'lock out' affect remaining.

I suspect the only thing about that shift know that is Triumph are the thre=
ads that allowed it to be spun onto the shifter. Reverse is to the bottom r=
ight, not left as shown, and it is 1st on the top left pull down for 2nd, u=
p and over for third, then down for fourth. Pop it over further to the righ=
t and pull down and you'll find reverse.
