Might be easier if you have a specific question. Basically you remove the
shims, reinstall the carrier & bearings, then measure
clearance without the R&P (and add .003") to get total shim thickness. Then
you install the R&P and measure again (subtracting
.005" IIRC) to get the shim thickness on the ring gear side. Subtract that
from the total to get shim thickness for the other side.
I ground out the centers of the old bearings so they would slide easily on and
off, and used them for most of the shim selection
process. But check to be sure the new bearings are the same thickness (with
the races installed). The cheap bearings from India
weren't even the same as each other (!), so I scrapped them and got some good
Timken.
