Looking at the 1965 Sebring pix, I see the caption about Peter Bolton crashing
after five laps. Correctly, it should say: "Peter Bolton did five quick laps
in the Spitfire before being hit from behind by one of the faster cars which
caused him to crash heavily. Fortunately, Peter was not seriously injured."
Memory won't tell me what the car was that hit the Spitfire. Kas may
remember.
In 1963, one of the TR4s was hit from behind by a Cobra, bending the exhaust
pipe which eventually burned through. The hole was below the tunnel and the
hot exhaust burned a hole through the fiber which would catch fire going down
the straight so the drivers had a small fire extinguisher with them to give
the fire a squirt as they braked. Between exhaust fumes, smoke and carbon tet
from the extinguisher it's luck they could concentrate on driving.
In the top row of pictures of Bridgehampton, 1961, page 2, there's a shot of
Fred Gamble in a Maserati, leading Hansgen and Holbert. As a Triumph employee
later that year, Fred participated with me in the first talks with Bob
Tullius. Fred later worked with Kas Kastner to develop the Triumph Racing
Support Program, the first driver support plan by a major manufacturer for
SCCA racing.
