Somebody asked about why we just don't use a bigger water pump pulley. the
answer is there isn't any room because of the thermostat neck cast into the
head. There might be a little room for upsizing but the aftermarket kits all
seem to have pretty small water pump pullies. My newest TR4, the ex-Dennis
Shea car came with a fluid-dampner modified to fit with a small pulley on the
front side. This moved the alternator and water pump pullies forward of the
stock location allowing an oversize home-made custom water pump pulley. It
also has a FIAT radiator of unknown source. That car can idle in my driveway
like a stock TR4.

Starting with a stock pulley is a good approach. I made my own pulley and
started by doing a little machine work on a stock pulley hub and used. This
greatly simplified the part I had to make. I used the bolt on balancer that
BFE and others sell. I wanted to make it small to slow down the water pump
and alternator, but the size was limited by the harmonic balancer. I wanted
to see if I could find a smaller bolt on balancer, but never got around to it.
There is a place that specializes in dampers - damper doctor or something like
that. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos of the pulley. I may have some
sketches.

Dennis,
What I think we need is a balancer pulley kit that slows down the water pump
and alternator. I always have trouble visualizing this, but I think smaller
crank pulley slows down the other two? Is this in your plan?

AMICI - I am working on a narrow belt conversion using the stock TR4/3 crank
pulleys. If any of you have crank pulley pieces and parts that you could
part
with for my experiment - bring them to Topeka.
See you all soon
