MOTORHOME manufacturers are more concerned with color schemes and floor plans.
Overhangs can be scary as you point out
Frequently on GCWR it comes down to the transmission. When we produced a
motorhome chassis, Ford Power Products removed the parking pawl and limited
the GCWR.
We developed a hydraulically actuated brake in front of the driveshaft behind
the tailshaft to overcome the lack of parking pawl on the C-6 Transmission,
but there really wasnt any way to overcome the limited GCWR. I think the
limit was 5000# or not more than 7500#.
We were producing 10,000 chassis a year when the business was sold to OSHKOSH
TRUCK. It lives on as FREIGHTLINER.......

Subject: RE: [Fot] How much do you think a GT6 could tow?
My motorhome (along with most current gasoline engined motorhomes) is only
ated to tow 5,000 lbs. After looking everything over, I think that's based
trictly on the length of the rear overhang and the relatively Mickey Mouse
ay the hitch is attached. I've got a friend that races a Shelby GT350 with
he same MH as I've got. His trailer weighs close to 9,000 lb loaded and
e's had no issues whatsoever with towing. I feel totally comfortable even
hough my loaded trailer is aroond 1000 lbs or so over the tow rating. I do
eep the speeds down and I drop the rig out of overdrive at the slightest
ill.

ow tech answer: Generally speaking the final product weight limits are
stablished by the weakest component rating installed from the supplier.
Tire ratings
xle ratings
ransmission ratings
pring ratings
The motorhome industry plays some silly games with these ratings, but I
hink most everyone else is pretty conservative.
